How much water did our ancestors drink?

Theres a lot of debate about the amount of water we should drink, does anyone know details about how much water people were drinking thousands of years ago?
Answers:
Probably not allot because it wasn't clean. But then back they they didn't know it COULD be cleaned. So I dunno. I would say not allot though. Most drank alcohol.
