How long does it usually take stone fragments to pass after lithotripsy?
Question:
I just had ESWL on Friday and haven't passed much of anything except a little bit of teeny gritty stuff. The stone was very high in my kidney, and I'm worried that it isn't all going to come out. I am having some small sharp pains in my kidney and down my ureter, and sometimes in my bladder. but nothing's coming out!
Answers:
The crushed stone particles start passing out with urine in 0 days to 3 weeks, varying from patient to patient. How big was it?
COMPLICATIONS:
HAEMATURIA: Haematuria means the appearance of blood in the urine. Generally transient Haematurea is seen which disappears within 24 hours. No treatment or mild diuretics are given to the patient. Nearly 100 per cent of renal stones treatment by ESWL result in hematuria, which is thought to be due to blunt parenchymal trauma rather than to stone fragments traumatizing the urothelium like shrapnel.
STEINSTRASSE: Literally, it means a street of stones. The broken stone particles line up in the lower ureter and cause obstruction and colic. To avoid this, a "Double J" or "Pigtail" stent is passed in patients having comparatively large stone volume preoperatively.
I would suggest having a followup with your urologist.
