For parents of disabled children, do you feel like you are getting all the services that your child needs?
Question:
I am writing a research paper for one of my college classes. I have a 2 year old son who is disabled and I do not feel as though he receives the services that he needs in spite of all the fighting and yelling and searching I do. I want to know if there are others that feel that way as I am having a difficult time finding any information elsewhere.
Answers:
I want to praise you for loving your son despite his disability. I am sorry you are not getting the help you need and I agreee with you. I don't know much about getting him the help he needs now (aside from Social Security) when he becomes a young man 16 & on, you can help him get on his feet by taking him to a DVR (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation) as long as he is able to work (limitations are fine but as long as he is ABLE), you can take him to DVR and they will help place him in a job. I hope this helps. Goodluck for the time being and stay strong!

My step son was born with spina bifida. He is very independant, and has excellent social skills. We have done everything to make him independant. His main problem is his memory. His short term memory is almost non-existant. We took him to the agency suggested to us, and they said they had never found someone they couldn't help. The only solution they had for him was to have him work with mentally challenged individuals. They were afraid if they did that he would regress in his social skills, so they nixed that idea. So we are kinda at a stand still. I'm sure he would love to get out and to things like everyone else, but so far nothing out there that can help him.
My son is 7 and has Down syndrome. He receives PT, OT and Speech thru school and he is on the waiver worker list (which is very long). I really dont know about other services and when I do hear of something it is usually too far away from us as we are out in the country. He has an awesome support system at school tho. Even the Middle School principal attends my sons IEP review meetings even tho my son will not be in his building for 3 more years! I would love to see some sort of water therapy, horse back riding, sport activities.but again, when I do hear of things like this its usually in another city an hour away.
Good luck on your paper and with your son. I hope you find what you are searching for.
