What foods should sufferer's of Gout avoid?

Question:

I always thought Gout was mainly suffered by people who drink too much but my husband was just diagnosed with it and he does not drink at all, he is actually allergic to alcohol. We were wondering if it could have been caused by something else in his diet. Does anyone know what foods he should avoid?
Answers:
Any type of meat, shellfish, spinach, asparagus, beans, peanuts, certain cheeses, the list is long. Each persons' reaction to these items are different. Consult your doctor for the list, you'd be surprised at what foods contribute to attacks. I used to drink 6-8 beers a day for years, I quit thinking alcohol was the main factor..wrong! Believe it or not STRESS is a major contributor, along with diet. My maintenance program includes 3000mg cherry extract capsules, 900mg allopurinol a day with plenty of water. Feel free to contact me for any information.

check your husband's diet for legumes.

Alcohol can aggravate it but doesn't cause it. Avoid organ meats such as heart, liver, etc. Actually meats aren't suppose to be good for you but those really upset mine. Adding a site to learn more about what to eat and not eat, also learn more about this.

People with gout should avoid chocolate and especially shell fish like shrimp and oysters and mussels and lobster.

My husband has gout also so I know from his doctor.

someone doesnt have to be a drinker to have gout, it caused by too much uric acid in his/her blood i think
my dad has it too
and he avoids any traces of nuts, alcohol especially beer, organ meats, scallops, squids, that's all i think about now

ps: where have you been? happy easter =)

i work for a weight loss company and we have several clients with gout, what our registered dieticians reccomend it having a very low protein diet, too much protein causes gout attacks
