what can happen if you abruptly stop taking statins?

Question:

Answers:
Your cholesterol will go up, other than that, not a whole lot, your side effects may persist for several days after you stop though

Other Answers:
I want to know too. I take them for cholesterol like you probably do. I imagine the livers manufacture of cholesterol would escalate and your cholesterol would elevate to its previous pre statin state. I don't have any idea if the liver would be adversely affected or if you wiould get bad headaches or other side effects. Ask a pharmacist or your doctor for a more accurate answer than the opinions you will get here. On this site most of the answers are opinions (like this one) but some people actually research or speak from experience. But still, I would call a pharmacist or consult your doctor.
If the statins give you side effects, then, those will be eliminated. I suggest that you eat a healthy diet and stay away from processed foods, "white foods" (white flour, white rice, white sugar). Eat brown, whole grain foods, unsalted nuts in moderation. etc.
You probably wouldn't see any immediate effects from the cessation of statin therapy. There would not be withdrawal symptoms or any other immediate repercussions. However, statin therapy does well to maintain your cholesterol levels where they are and even improve them. You could possibly see an increase in your LDL cholesterol levels on a lipid panel if you discontinue use of your statin. Elevated cholesterol could result in atherosclerosis which can lead to stokes or myocardial infarctions. Discuss your options with your physician before you make any decisions about discontinuing a prescription medication.
