tolerance to pain meds-oxycodone?

Question:
i have dejenerative joint desease in my cervical and thoracic spine, i am prescribed 120 10 mg tabs a month but i always run out early because the pain is so bad and i've developed a tolerance. am considering asking for methadone but don't know much about it. any words of wisdom?

Answers:
Methadone has been in the news lately with deaths.
Discuss this with your doctor. If s/he can't help you, contact the nearest major medical center (usually affiliated with a medical school). Ask them if they have a pain management department, as many do, and make an appointment.

This is 2006, and IMO no one should have to live in severe pain. There are may ways to help you, and these are the folks who know how to do it.
Words of wisdom -- The solution to chronic pain is not to develop a tolerance. Take a different analgesic each day of the week. For example, Sunday you take oxycodone, Monday try Demerol, Tuesday take morphine, and so on.

The difficult part is finding a physician who understands pharmacology and is willing to put you on this program.

Of course another solution is to simply keep increasing your dose as the tolerance develops. You could also try combining various meds. Soma combined with Valium is very effective at reducing pain.

Best wishes.
