Is it really true that if you didn't have a big toe you wouldn't be able to keep your balance?

It does affect your balance somewhat but with physio and the proper footwear (like boots or runners) you are able to balance, dance and do whatever you like.
I once looked after a surfer who had a forefoot amputation. He got some cool orthopaedic shoes made for the affected foot and he was able to, with practise, surf the waves again :)

Yeah. You push off your big toe when walking as well, so you would have a harder time walking (or running) without it.

It is why guys like Jack Lambert (football player, Pittsburgh Steelers) had to retire because of "turf toe." It was too painful to play.
