How to solve an irritating hard water problem...?

Question:
After showering, whether in hot or cold water, regardless of soap and shampoo, I'm left with a tingling itch all over my body which lasts about fifteen minutes. My girlfriend reports the same sensation. Now, I live on Lake Michigan, so I'm dealing with some hard water problem I believe. Is there a way to "cure" this? Lotion after a shower does nothing, and air drying makes it worse. I can't come close to affording a water softener, and I rent anyways to it's out of the question. Anyone ever have to deal with this problem?

Answers:
If you have water that is that hard, what you may be suffering from is the soap residue left on your skin that can't be rinsed off. I don't know how to cure this if you are taking a shower- as the only thing I know is either adding a water softener, such as Calgon, or using an inline filter. The calgon could be added to a tub of bathwater, much as it's added to a washer, but not in a shower. Since you rent, the inline filter is out. The only other idea I have is to treat a bucket of water and use that for a final rinse off to remove the soap residue left on your skin. Hard water doesn't attach itself to the soap molecules because calcium already attached to the water prevent it. Free calcium combines with the soap to form a curd (crud???) which you will probably notice forming around the tub and sinks. You don't see any suds action from your soap/shampoo, so you use more until you do see suds- making things even worse, as there is now more soap to make curds with. In the end you get left coated in the soap crud curds and feel itchy. So the only solution is to use less soap to wash, and rinse in softer water- however you decide to get it softened. Sorry I can't come up with a better solution for you.
use bath salts...hope it helps
