Lump on ring finger, top joint. Any ideas?

This sounds like something my sister keeps having trouble with on her right hand. According to her doctor, a cyst pops up when she overuses the hand (which is kind of bad, since she works in an office everyday), and she has to go in so they can drain it off. This cyst is hard to the touch. She gets mad at me when I poke it. ;)
If it's soft to the touch, though, it could just be a blister.
In either case, it would probably be best to have it checked out.
Believe it or not, it may be a result of your writing style. I had the same thing on the top joint of my right ring finger for years, until I realized that I could change how I hold a pencil or pen and get rid of it. I had a wierd writing style in the first place, and I haven't found many people who hold a pencil like I did, but you may be one of the lucky few. So try writing differently - see if how you hold a writing utensil puts any pressure on that spot, and if so, change how you write. It takes some getting used to but after awhile it's so much better for your joint.
If I'm totally off and you don't even write with that hand, then think about what you do to make the finger hurt. Is there anything you do to put pressure on it? If so, stop it or change what you're doing. You could lightly wrap the finger to remind yourself not to use it. I suggest going for a few days, perhaps a week, without putting any pressure or really using the finger at all. If the problem doesn't go away or gets worse, it's probably time to go see a doctor. Good luck!
