The primary job of physiotherapy (or physical therapy in the US) is to help people restore their ability to function.to walk, get up, go to work, and lead a productive life. We do this by evaluating the patient's neuromusculoskeletal system and determining what is causing a loss of function. It could be because of pain, weakness, limited mobility, structural anomalies, etc.
For instance, take someone who is having shoulder pain. The pain affects the person's ability to obtain an object off a shelf. The physiotherapist first evaluates the patient, taking baseline measurements and performing physical tests. They then determine that the person has shoulder impingement syndrome due to poor mechanics of the shoulder. The mechanics of the shoulder are poor because of restrictions in the capsule that surround the joint and weakness in the muslces that control the shoulder blade. Goals are written to achieve functional recovery and increase the mobility of the shoulder. A treatment plan is then formed which may include joint mobilization to the shoulder and strengthening of the specific muscles. They then perform these joint mobilizations and teach the patient the strengthening exercises.
The job setting can be quite variable and range from outpatient clinics, to hospitals to schools, etc.
