how do I help heal a pinched nerve?

Question:

Answers:
Depends what is pinching it and where. Common areas where the nerve can be pinched are: where the nerve exits the spine; from a bulging or herniated disc; from a deep hip muscle called your piriformis being in spasm around the nerve; from the nerve itself being tight. That's just for starters!!

You need an evaluation from a certified McKenzie therapist - a specially trained physical therapist who can evaluate you and determine where the nerve is being pinched. Check out www.mckenziemdt.org - they also have exercises that you can do now that may help.

Is this a recent problem? If so, putting ice around the painful area is the best thing for up to 10 minutes every hour. If it is older than 1-2 weeks, use a heating pad for 10-15 mins. If in doubt, use ice! If you put heat on something that is inflammed, it will get worse.

Ask your doctor for a referal to a good physical therapist. We are trained to find out what the problem is and treat you accordingly.

Accupuncture may also help. So may massage therapy to the tight areas.
