Should I choose to go to allopathic or osteopathic medical school?

Question:
I am entirely in love with the idea of becoming a doctor some day. I want to be the physician who stays with you from the "womb to the tomb" as is said- (but hopefully not the tomb, of course). I want to help facilitate the healing process and help others become better healers for themselves and their families, but I am hung up on whether it would be best to practice as an osteopathic or allopathic doctor. I am attracted to the holistic side of osteopathy, but I know as an MD I could practice similarly. I just don't know if I want to endure the heirarchial system of allopathic medicine.because I think they way they train their doctors and even treat eachother competition-wise goes against what I believe makes for a good doctor. BUT- osteopathic doctors are still much less respected than allopathic ones, and that would make it difficult for me in the work place no matter what. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Answers:
Go with allopathic. Not everyone that becomes an allopathic doctor is super competitive and in it for the money. Most people I know go into medicine for altruistic reason. You can't finish and go through all that crap if you do not care about your patients. If you go through the crap you might as well get the MD. Of course, many may turn cynical. Just realize that it is a hard, challenging path no matter which direction you choose but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. How many jobs give you the satisfaction that you have helped someone everyday?

Other Answers:
I currently have an osteopathic doctor and to be honest he treats me just like a GP would and gives alot of medications. When I was younger I went to a "D.O." and we knew alot about the bones and dealt with pain and less with pills. So I believe that the osteopaths are being taught the same way but just may have a little less schooling. If you can be a good physician of any kind I say go for it and give me a call, b/c I have not come across one in a long time. Listen to your patients and earn their respect, don't worry about what the other Doc's think.
