did i sprain my ankle?


Question:
i was in my (soon to be ) room, its a mess in there and i slipped on some papers. i went down and managed to stand after a breather. my ankle really hurts now, it's been about 15 minutes, i can walk ok, but the muscles feel really tight. did i sprain it? and what should i do?

Answers:
There is certainly a possiblity of sprain or at least bruising. Certainly if you could not walk on it, there would be concern for a fracture.

As mentioned, use RICE. This is an acronym for

REST: don't over exert youself for the next couple days

ICE: Use cold packs (bag of ice wrapped in a towel) a few times a day for 5-10 minutes at a time. Do this only for the first 2 or 3 days.

COMPRESSION: Use of an elastic bandage will help decrease the effects of swelling

ELEVATION: Take time to lie down a couple times a day... Keep the leg elevated above the level of your heart to also help minimize swelling.

If there is significant pain beyond 1-2 weeks, it's time to see the doc!
It sounds like you sprained it. Use the RICE treatment for the next 24-48 hours.
