How do you get thru an MRI with out panic attack?

Question:
I was supposed to have an MRI and when I got in there, My stress level kept rising, so bad that I had to abort the test.. My only solution was that I had to travel over a hundred miles away and used a very expensive Open MRI. then I was able to do it.. Only, in the future, I am sure that there will be more times that I wont be able to travel there. I dont think a sedative will work.

Answers:
Its really no big deal. I've had one done before. I would suggest taking something to cover your eyes with. you know those little things some ladies sleep in that cover their eyes? I cant think of the name of it. LOL

Also, where head phones w/ your favorite music. :)

Just keep telling yourself. no one has died from having an MRI - odviously your doctor thinks you need one. It could be more harmful for you not to have one - not knowing what is really wrong w/ you.

Other Answers:
Sleep or headphones, like an IPOD or Mp3player

Ask about the Open MRI. Instead of a tube, two large platters are used on top and underneath to leave the patent with peripheral vision and less of a feeling of entrapment.

Headphones, iPod or any other electronic device can not be used due to the strong magnetic field.

well there's two ways one is to get valium or ativan from your MD, the other is to stay awake the entire night before the test then when you get close your and usually you can fall to sleep You have 2 choices; 1. Open MRI. 2. Be sedated. That is it. You have to accept this. I have the same problem. The open MRI was the only way I could go through with it too.

lay back & relax with eyes closed it dont hurt i have had 9 of them it is just boring to lay there music or radio help to pass the time on the last one i fell asleep & they had to wake me up after

Your doctor can prescribe medicine to reduce the anxiety, but you will need someone to drive you home after the test.

There is a type of headphone that can work in an MRI. They have no metal parts in them and are like the ones that airplanes used to use where the sound travels through a hollow plastic tube. Perhaps contacting some MRI departments or doing a Google search could locate some. Discuss with your doctor about takeing a mild sedative BEFORE arriving at the hospital and another prior tho the exam.
