lack of urine for 12 hours in an older child (or only a very small amount of dark yellow urine)

Dizzyness, light-headedness, confusion (or general odd behaviour), shaking and/or trembling, little to no urine output, darker urine, dry mouth, dry eyes.

If you suspect any of these as dehydration, run from the pc and administer fluids -- plain water, pedialyte -- or get to the ER.
Sleeping and can't be roused (get him/her to a hospital quick quick quick). If you press on the skin it makes a white dot like impression. Throwing up water. Walking like a drunkard (check blood levels of meds!).
not peeing enough pump him or her full of Gatorade if that doesn't work get him to the Dr
Assess turgor: pinch the skin, a healthy person's skin will bounce back quickly, if they are dehydrated it will not.
take my answer very seriously. if your son feels thirsty, he is already 60% dehydrated. he should be drinking about his bodyweight in water everyday. if it's hot out, and he feels dizzy, put him in a shade immediately and give him water. if he looks like he's about to faint, again, put him into shade, give him water, but call the ambulance.
