Answers:
Siestas in the summer help people avoid working during the hottest part of the day. There is no need for that in the winter (though some prefer not to be out early AMs or nightime during the winter because of the extreme cold).

Other Answers:
in america we don't do siestas, we don't have enough time to take a break during the work day!
Try living near the equator for a while. And in the summer. And near the ocean (humid!). Now, do it without air conditioning.

I'm not sure where you're from or how you grew up. But I've been to Latin America in the wet and hot seasons. The buildings are like ovens. Nobody really has air conditioning. The heat just builds and builds in them as it get closer to noon. Since there is no A/C and no good air movement, it is impossible to escape from the 100+ degree temps and high humidity. You simply can't work like that. So, all you want to do is lay down somewhere, turn on a fan, turn out the lights, and cool off as best as you can.
