Has anyone ever had an ankle fixated by an Orthopedic Surgeon?

Question:
My Orthopedic Surgeon said my only option for the pain of my callus is to have my ankle fixated. I really don't want to have this done, but I may have to anyway. The pain is unbearable at times. Has anyone else had any kind of similar experience--please share your experiences.
What do you do about your clothes not fitting?
How much recovery time did you have?
Did you have a Home Health Agency to help you?

Answers:
Yes, my Orthopedic Surgeon performed a procedure called a Tendon Transfer, which fixated my left ankle. It involved taking the tendons in the front of my foot being dis-connected and criss-crossed , then re-connected in the front and back of my ankle. This left my ankle fixated, somewhat, with little to no flexability. I was in my first cast 8 weeks. I then was put into another and given crutches to do some weight bearing. After 4 weeks I was given a walking boot and started physical therapy, 3 days a week for 3 months. It was a long road back to recovery, but Home Health was not needed. In the beginning I had family members that came in a helped me out when my husband was at work. But, when I got the second cast I was totally capable of taking care of myself. Oh, and as far as clothing fitting, it's all the same. Of course with the casts it was either shorts, skirts or dresses. Only thing that will be different with the anle being fixated is, that I have to take a little more time getting thru my pants leg. I need a larger shoe size because my left foot is larger now.

there is one company in India called the forerunners healthcare that arranges all types of surgery for international patients at very low cost.

I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as all surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your hip surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin also got her knee surgery for acl repair in India through the forerunners healthcare .SHe is more than very happy with the results. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.hope this helps

http://www.forerunnershealthcare.com A few questions back to you.do you mean talus not callus? A callus is a thickened area of skin usually from excessive pressure or rubbing; whereas the talus is the bone than forms the ankle complex with the tibia and fibula. Why would your clothes not fit? If you are worried, the majority of doctors put on a walking boot instead of a cast even if you are non-weight bearing. Recovery ranges with non-weightbearing typically around 4-6 weeks then progressive weight bearing depending on your physician. Post surgical pain is common but it goes away and will be significantly different than what you are currently experiencing. Have you tried physical therapy prior to making a decision regarding surgery? It may help resolve the problem or at least make it more tolerable until you are ready to commit to the surgery. Also, besides doing fusions at the ankle, they have also started doing total ankle replacements. You may be a candidate.look into all your options and always get a second opinion if you have doubts. As to your last question, home health is typically not needed following an ankle fusion assuming you are in otherwise good health. Hope some of this helps.
