can i make distilled water by just putting regular tap water in a jug and let it set?

Question:

Answers:
No - the water would still have dissolved solids, although chlorine will evaporate in 24 hours. You'd still have sodium, magnesium potassium, flouride if it's added to your tap water, and other impurities. You're best to buy distilled water (available at pharmacies and medical supply houses) if you need it - building your own still is a pain.

Other Answers:
no distilled water is collected steam,,,all minerals are gone

No, distilled water is water that is boiled, evaporates, and is then re-condensed. no.

Distilled water is water that has been evaporated and re-condensed into water.

the name comes from destillation.

dis·til·la·tion Pronunciation Key (dst-lshn)
n.

1. The evaporation and subsequent collection of a liquid by condensation as a means of purification: the distillation of water.
2. The extraction of the volatile components of a mixture by the condensation and collection of the vapors that are produced as the mixture is heated: petroleum distillation.
3. A distillate.

"Distilled" means that the water has been boiled off and then recondensed, reducing drasticly the impurities in the water. Letting a jug of water sit for weeks will not improve it's quality in any way. Yes, just put ONE DROP (no more) of bleach per GALLON of water and let it sit at least a week or more before drinking. That's how people were preserving water for the Y2K scare.

And by the way, regular tap water isn't really bad for you (unless you live in Mexico City or something) because there's nothing that harmful in it. It's always treated and goes straight to your sink. Most pipes are made out of non-lead metals now too, so it's fine. Really.
