How to enrich my mother's life after her stroke. what can I do?

Question:
My mother had a right brain stroke in Jan, 02. Her left-hand sight is gone and the left side of her body is weakened. her hand is curled up with almost no movement. but she has use of her left leg. with help.

Answers:
When you are with her sit on that left side and make her brain have to use the right vision on the left side of her body. Her brain needs a lot of stimulation and the suggestion of talking with her about past life events is great. She will be able to tap into long term memory best of all and needs this stim along with retraining her left side to increase it's functioning. For the curled up hand, if there is no motion I would contact an Occupational Therapist about a soft palm protector that will keep her fingers from getting contracted into her hand for hygiene purposes. If there is a little movement you may want to look into a new therapy method called Saebo-Flex that has been doing miraclulous things with people with old CVA's as long as she can still identify that her left side is still there,(is the sight actually gone or is it left neglect, where her brain refuses to identify that the left exists), because if this is the case you are best focusing on regaining purposeful activity that will motivate her on that right side. If she liked to cook have her help with simple meal prep items like mixing ingredients together (use a nonslip mat, under the bowl so she can do this one handed). Make drop cookies, like chocolate chip to remind her of things maybe you did when you were little. Have her go through old pictures to make a photo album or write on the back of them who they were so those memories aren't lost, etc. I would consult the Recreational Therapist or Occupational Therapist at your local rehab unit or hospital for ideas as that is their specialty, helping regain purposeful lives, if you have a University with an OT program in your area you may also be able to get a student to come work with your Mom for free as part of a research project or just for the experience. You can try the aota (American Occupational Therapy Association) website and look for a link to the Well elderly study and you may get a lot of ideas that way. The whole idea is to tap into things your Mom cares about and can still be a part of. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear of this. Ask her doctor what you should do!

Tim,
Just spend time with her. She is your mom. Talk to her about memories you have with her. Tell her you love her. Show her pictures of your life, and thank her for bringing you into the world. Read to her. Play music for her. Just be with her the way was when you were helpless as a baby.you won't regret it

My mom had the same type of stroke about ten years ago, Her whole right side was paralyzed. She had to learn to do everything again, talk, walk. It took time and patience for her, cause she got so frustrated cause she was right handed and she learned how to become left handed. Her right hand is curled up still with limited use. She drags her right foot alot. She aged ten years from her stroke, but at least we still have her here The doctor said if she would of exercised her hand, like squeezing a rubber ball or something she would of had more use of her hand. So don't give up on your mom she will get better with your love and commitment. Hang in there ,she will need you.
