Is it true that it's hazardous to live close to the high voltage electric line?

Many people now believe that living too close to high voltage power lines causes problems, including a variety of cancers and also mental disturbances leading to depression and suicide.
There are many reported "clusters" of these instances in different estates and housing developments that are near overhead power lines and some scientific studies have demonstarted statistically significant links between, for example, cancer in children and the proximity to power lines.
Needless to say, the power companies and even government agencies (both of whom would suffer financial loss if all this was proved beyond doubt) regularly produce other scientists who deny there is any link between power lines and any disease.
My personal view is... STAY AWAY!! Even if you're not affected and don't get sick, the value of your property may drop if a link is proved later and you may not even be able to sell your house.
