Why wouldn't a paramedic unit on the water, not have dive equipment? Just snorkel gear? In a major city?

Question:

Answers:
No $$$ in the old treasury for appropriate equipment.

Other Answers:
because they weren't trained to dive. They have one job and that is to provide first aid, they can't be diving and swimming around. That is why they usually bring in trained divers (search and rescue divers) for such an event.

As a former EMT, I can easily answer your question. Money.

When we get called in the middle of the night to an accident on the freeway where a car full of people are dying, everyone is shouting, "do something"! Fathers and Mothers tell us "Save my baby. No matter what it costs, save my baby"!

They sit for hours and days in the hospital waiting for the doctors to fix their loved ones but. Will they take 1/2 hour to go to the polls and vote to give the EMS more money? Will they vote to give the EMS more equipment? No.

It is trulty a sad state of affairs. I have seen several people die in my life simply because the medical teams or Fire Department did not have the equipment they needed. A simple $10.00 per person increase in taxes that just didn't happen.

Remember this the next time you go to vote, it just may be you next time.

You answered your own question. A Paramedic unit is responsible for the care and treatment of sick or injured persons. It is the responsibility of a Search and Rescue Dive Unit to locate persons in or under the water and transport to the surface where the Paramedics can begin treatment.
