Professional advice about broken toe please?

Question:
I smacked my little toe on a shopping trolley yesterday and thought the pain would go away but it's not and I'm limping around. I'm not sure if it's bruised (the toe is slightly purple) or broken. I've heard if it was broken nothing can be done. Is that true? I don't want to wait for hours in the A&E to be told this. Also if it was broken how long does it take to heal roughly. Thanks.

Answers:
You probably busied your little toe. That happened to me a lot when I played sports. Just puts some ice on it, and don't walk around as much. Your toe isn't broken. If it was, you would be crying right now. You wouldn't even be on the computer. Your bone can also be bruised as well. So stay off your feet!

Other Answers:
The only thing you can do it apply an ice pack to control the swelling. The toe is too small for a splint, so pain killers are the only solution.
can you bend it? if you can its just bruised, put some ice on it and raise your foot up.

if not, you need it X-rayed and of course they can do something about it. Look at Wayne Rooney! Takes about 5-6 weeks to fix a bone, depending on your age.

Take some aspirin or other pain killer to take the swelling down.

Get well soon !
I broke my toe before Christmas and couldn't face the idea of A&E at that time of year. So I went to my sister in law who's a doctor - she said, "Oh, dear" and that was that. You could get it splinted but in reality, there's nothing much you can do. You'll just be in pain for a couple of weeks and your toe may not be straight again (like mine is) but you just have to bear with it! Sorry!

Best to go to the doctor
which is best

Deformed toe

or

3 hrs at A&E
Whenever I damage my toe, which i do often in taekwondo, I apply ibuprofen gel and then wrap it to the next toe.
You won't get any sympathy from a doctor or at A&E for a broken toe. I've broken all of mine (excepy for my big toes) during 18 years of kickboxing competition. Some of which have been broken 2 or 3 times over. I even spiral fractured the toe next to my big toe once, GP sent me to a fracture clinic for that one, but they still just told me to take pain killers and wait for it to heal.

You'll just have to hang in there, take pain killers, keep it elevated as much as poss. You can strap it to the toe next to it for support, but make sure you put cotton wool between them to stop your damaged toe from curving inwards to much. It needs to be straight. The pain will start to ease within the next week.

Good luck
Hello

Sorry about your toe, sounds sore.

If your little toe is broken your likely to find it extremely painful to weightbear and to have anyone move it off the floor as well. Fractures of the little toe are very painful but not generally managed as you say in other way than rest and painkillers.

If however you have fracture up into your metatarsal or a cuneiform (small foot bone) then this is a different story. Have a feel up your foot from the toe, is it just your little toe that hurts or further up too?

Fractures take about 6 weeks to heal (dependent on age and bone quality and the absence of disease) but this can be a bit longer in lower limb fractures. This said fractures will start to put down new bone growth (callous) after 3 weeks and the 6 weeks healing shouldnt mean 6 weeks pain!

Your best course of action is to ice it daily (2 times a day 20 mins pack of frozen peas wrapped in a wet tea towell) and if its still no better within a week and your still limping go for that xray.

Take painkillers as necessary

All the best
You can only put ice on and strap it to the next toe to support it.
If it is broken your right the emergency won't do much for you, get some tape and tape your little toe to the one next to it. That should help some, and take Ibuprofen for the pain and swelling you should start feeling better in about 2 weeks. Good Luck.
I broke the same toe about 7 weeks ago. I did nothing and the bone healed in about 5-6 weeks, HOWEVER, the pain is still there when it goes through any type of trauma. It's probably going to hurt for at least a couple of months if not longer when you apply any type of pressure to it. I would just tape it up and wear sneakers whenever you go out.
I did this earlier this year. It was the one next to the baby (little toe). I went to the emergency room in the next day and they taped it to the stronger toe next to it, gave me pain meds and crutches (overkill on the crutches I think, I didn't use them). They also referred me to go see an orthopedist. I had to buddy tape it to the next toe for about six weeks. You really don't want to fool around with this because if it heals badly, crooked or wrong, it could effect your balance in the future.
