HELP... Need a ultra sound after UTI wouldn't go away?

Question:
Ok well last Weds the dr said that I have a UTI after I had been having pain for 3 mths, so I took Cipro for 3 days. Even after the dose was done I felt WORSE. Having back pain and shakes along with nausea. SO I went back in and they said that the infection was still there and BAD. SO now they have me on Cipro for 10 days. Tomorrow I have to have a ultra sound done and I was wondering why would they order that?
Also I was wondering what if this UTI doesn't go away after this treatment then what will they do?
Has this every happend to anyone before I am SOOO worried and I really don't feel well. All day I felt like I was so sick and achey. The bacteria is E Coli I think also. PLEASE HELP!

Answers:
The Ultrasound is just one more step in helping with the diagnosis. They know you have a UTI but the Cipro should have knocked it. Since it didn't they are looking at other causes of infection. You might have a cyst on your kidney or maybe a stone. If the Ultrasound is negative I would expect a IVP Intra Venous Pyelogram fancy name for contrasted kidney picture with X-rays. I hope this helps. I wouldn't worry too much. This is somewhat common. I suspect that the reason this infection might be stubborn is because you let it go for some months before treatment. At least this is what I gather from your question.

My daughter had an ultrasound because of persisitent UTIs. Ultrasound is a good way to look at the bladder and see how it functions. The doctor wants to make sure that everything is in good working order.

Only your doctor knows what is the best course of action for you if the medicine doesn't work. There are probably more pwerful antibiotics that can be used.

I hope you feel better soon!
COULD BE ENDROMETRIOSIS A WEB OF TISSUES
have you ever thought about questioning why you are on cipro and not another antibiotic that would clear up the infection? the problem could be that you are sensitive/allergic to cipro, and you are reacting badly to the drug, not the infection itself. if you have a UTI, it is likely they did what is called a 'culture' on your urine, which shows a list of antibiotics that would successfully kill the bacteria causing your infection. it is likely that cipro is NOT the only drug that will cure your infection. other drugs, such as levaquin, septra, or macrobid may also fix your UTI. i would ask your doctor about trying a new drug to see if it agrees with you first and perhaps will make you feel better with less pain and less shakes/nausea.

if the infection is bad enough, however, and if it has been allowed to go too long without treatment, it is possible that it has gotten up into the kidneys in which case your back pain may be a sign of a kidney infection. i would ask for a new drug, and go along with the ultrasound so they can see what your bladder looks like - it is painless and will help your doc get a good understanding of what is going on, and allow him or her to treat you better.
A UTI can be a serious infection if not treated or cured fairly early. The reason being that the infection can travel up thru the bladder and the ureters (sp?) and into the kidneys. If the kidneys become infected it can cause the way they work (filtering out the bad stuff from your blood) to change and possibly even cause the infection to travel elsewhere in the body. The ultrasound is probably to check the condition of your kidneys and to assess how far your infection has spread. Having E.Coli in your system is very bad. Good luck and I hope you get better soon.
to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what they are looking for with the ultrasound, it could be they're investigating for a cause of the UTI, or looking to be sure there aren't any cysts or other issues... sounds like the infection you have was resistant to the first string of antibiotics, so hopefully they did a culture and sensitivity to be sure that Cipro would be sucessful...if it is you should notice a difference in your symptoms pretty quick (within a few days). Just be sure to finish the whole course of meds or it can come back! It's also possible that it has now involved your kidneys (the infection travels up the urinary tract when untreated), and this could explain the back pain. hang in there, I hope the treatment works, and I wouldn't be too concerned about the ultrasound.
Try not to anticipate what is going to happen before it happens. Secondly, while an ultrasound is not painful per se, it can be very uncomfortable. You will need to drink approximately 36 ounces of water approximately 1 hour prior to the study, and then be asked to hold it until the ultrasound is completed. Not an easy task if you have a UTI or a small bladder. Good luck and feel better.
Don't worry, you did the right thing by going to the doctor's! The ultrasound is going to tell the doctors if the UTI is now a kidney infection. From your symptoms, it sounds like it. They are doing this so they can put you on a stronger antibiotic to help the infection. If you have any other questions, you can email me.
They are just ordering an ultra sound to find out what it is. If it's bad (worse case ) it could be a tumor. If it's not that bad it could just be kidney stone. Hope it's not that bad. Good Luck! It's never happened to me before but I'll be praying for you. Now I have had a UTI and the dr put me on levaquin and it cleared up right away.
