Go to your pharmacy ask for Calamine Lotion. I had poison Ivy 1/2 dozen times as a kid. DON"T scratch it will spread it and can complicate the rash with other problems. There is a new combination available I can't remember what it is. The combo has calamine, and something added. Your pharmacist can be helpful.
Every day someone asks this question - tis the season! I have had multiple poison ivy rashes and found that the best thing to relieve itch is to get to the drug store and get some Aveeno Oatmeal Bath, Calamine Lotion, and generic Benadryl - called dyphenhydramine. When you get home, take 1 or 2 Benadryl, soak in a cool oatmeal bath until the water is freezing - about 30 minutes or so, and then put the Calamine on the rash. Always keep the area of the rash as cool as possible - that will help minimize the reaction and encourage healing. If the rash covers a large area, is "spreading" to areas that you are positive did not come in contact with the urushiol oil, or your eyes are swelling or you are experiencing any other symptoms you may have a "systemic" reaction and you should see a doctor for prednisone - given either as shots or pills.
you can try an oatmeal bath.(cheap way to go is to buy regular rolled oates and put some in a knee high, tie it off and swoosh it around in bath while water is running) that will soothe the itching.then you can try drying up the rashes with alcohol on a cotton ball. It will sting a little, but will dry them up faster. calamyne lotion also helps soothe the itching.
Go guy some antihistamine ointment. it eases it quickly!!!
There is a new soap that can wash off the poison ivy irritant. It is called Zanfel. You should obtain symptomatic relief very soon after washing; however, in bad cases it takes more than one washing. This is a far superior management option than suppressing your body response to the irritant (and germs) by a prescription of corticosteroids (which really is needed to 10 to 14 days) while waiting for the poison ivy irritant to naturally sloughs away.
use GOLD BOND
my doc gave me steroids and cortisone cream for it, but the best thing he ever told me about was this product from TECNU it is a oak and ivy wash and it relieves the itchies for hours. just wash with it for 3 mins. then rinse it off and wa la! no more itchies! you can get this from miejers in the first aide section or your pharmacist can order it for you. you have to tell them the upc number : 83926 14100 so he can order it.
Taking cold soaks with baking soda helps. You need to stay in the water about 15 minutes a time. Also if you take Benadryl when you first start to itch it will help.
Oatmeal baths and anti inflammitory creams also help.
