Knowing about drugs does not prevent you from being affected while using them. One of the most damaging effects is a loss of rational thinking skills and perception. He may have thought he had taken less but OD'd through seriously screwed up perception.

Fact: Opiates distort the higher brain functions controlling visual, auditory, tactile (touch) and general perceptions. Methadone is a synthetic which helps stabilize the body of a person who is addicted to heroin - which is one of the most powerful opiates known. How does it help? By giving the body a synthetic "fix"! It's replacing one drug with another!

The difference is that methadone is less damaging physically and distorts the thought process less - but is no less addictive!

So, as harsh as this sounds, the person played with something that inevitably leads to death - either of the mind or body, but in any case is lethal. You can only play Russian Roulette so long before you don't hear "click".

it doesn't really matter how much a person knows about drugs. If they are recreational drug users, then they are stupid and will do stupid things.

Because that person does not take heed to their own advice. Most people are good at giving advice, but are not able to apply it in their own lives.

I know alot about cars, but that doesn't mean I can't die from a car accident. It's called "accident" for a reason.

Because they think they knew enough to be safe. They felt invincible! Either that or their mind was so far gone, they did not realize how much they were taking.
