what is this lump on my knuckle?

Question:
I am 40ish, and started playing volleyball a month ago, I have jammed my index finger, it swells with over use, and is still tender, and sometimes painful. I have noticed that there is a small bump on my knuckle that was not there before. I feel the most pain if pressure is applied to the sides of this finger. I wonder what this bump would be, and will it go away? And...no I did not quit my volleyball team, I just guard this finger, and I have not put it in a splint, because my job requires all of my fingers in a busy office setting at the keyboard. I do ice it at home when it is swelled up.

Answers:
My guess, based on your history is possibly a fracture...one that involved the interphalangeal joint (knuckle). I would recommend xrays to aid in diagnosis. If it is non-displaced, rest, anti-inflammatories, splinting would help. Intra-articular fractures ( in the joint fractures) that are displaced, if left untreated, can lead to early arthritic changes. Strongly recommend orthopaedic evaluation....!
