Found out today my thyroid isn't working right. Exactly what does your thyroid do?
Question:
Answers:
Your thyroid gland governs all of the metabolic processes in your body so it is very important. When your thyroid malfunctions by producing either too much or too little thyroxine (the hormone it makes) it can really wreak havoc. Too much and you are sweaty, thin jittery etc. ; too little and you may be overweight, extremely tired and have edema (swelling) in the face and hands.
Other Answers:
The thyroid is one of the larger endocrine glands in the body. It is a double-lobed structure located in the neck and produces hormones, principally thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), that regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. Iodine is necessary for the production of both hormones. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) are the most common problems of the thyroid gland.

Lots. Metabolism is the one its most know for - but, the thyroid, pituitary glad, and one other place up in the brain I can't remember... also control all of your body's hormones, and - uh, I think they're part of the endocrine system.... That means everything from monitoring energy, to mood, to some of the parts of the digestive system. So, you might end up with lots of energy, or little, find yourself depressed, etc. All kinds of things can go wrong - depending on which portion, and what other things are affected in conjunction.
