If cigarettes are bad for you, then why don't they stop making and selling them?

Question:
Why make cigarettes (or any other product) that is meant to be harmful to your health?

Answers:
Because the government makes a lot of money from taxing cigarettes and therefore they will not stop making it. They have to have money for wars, exotic trips, etc. Also, though, there is the whole prohibition thing..or the drug war. Outlawing a thing that people want will not stop people from growing, processing, selling, or buying it. The whole market will just go underground, increasing crime, etc. Prime example: marijuana. If the government were smart, they would tax marijuana the way they do cigs: it would make them lots of money, decrease crime and the number of people in prison for drug related crimes, and make us all a lot happier. Point is, the government doesn't really care whats good or bad for us..they care about whether or not they can tax and control it for the good of their pockets.

Other Answers:
They bring in a lot of $$$!

$$$ I've got a great idea! Why don't we ban EVERYTHING someone doesnt like? That'll be awesome! No one will ever have to be offended again.

They're not made intentionally to harm anyone, and it's not illegal to manufacture them.
So they make 'em.
It's not like anybody's holding a gun to a smoker's head.

cuz they can make money off them.some people will do anything for money. It's like wine or computer games. It is bad, when excessive and since it has been a industry already, it can not be wiped out in one day.

Cigarette companies know their product is bad for you, but they like their money more than they care about their customers. Tobacco is VERY addictive, so don't ever start smoking. This is the voice of experience speaking.

politicians have investments in it. the tabacco industry is a strong and powerful company. They would make sure that they are not shut down.

Because the goverment makes so much freaking money off the taxes they cant afford to ban them..And population control comes to mind as well Because they bring in tons and tons of cash, the people who produce them are very wealthy and they can pay lobbyists lots of money to get the government and their political friends to keep making them.

cigarette company's are making millions of dollars off of cigarette profits, that is not something that they would just stop making.

Because in the free world, people have freedom of choice. If people want to smoke, and in their judgement the pleasures of smoking outweigh the health risks, who are YOU or anyone else to take that decision away from them?

You want to be told what to do and how to live, go live in an Islamic country.

If they stopped making everything that was bad for you, we'd never eat or drive.

If it's good or bad for you, as long as it makes money, people will buy them.

Because the tobacco industry is greedy, they could care less about the consequences that their products produces to the overall health of their consumers. They make billions of dollars every year, they're not about to shutdown to a few protests. For the same reason when they passed the alcohol prohibition amendment to the US constitution. It made everyone want to drink more.

Cigarettes are bad for people and the makers put chemicals in them to get especially young people addicted to them. They do it to make greedy money. If they took everything off the market that was bad for you then there would be nothing. Food is bad for you, some drinks are bad for you and etc..
