Hi, many things can cause an enlarged heart. Longstanding high blood pressure, problems with the heart valves, infections causing fluid around the heart. I think what your doctor wants to do is a transesophageal echocardiogram which is an ultrasound of your heart. This is more or less a moving picture of your heart while it is working and it will give your doctor more information about the causes and possibly treatment for your heart. Lots of people have enlarged hearts and do just fine but it is always a good idea to know what's causing the problem.
To see why the heart is enlarged. You have to treat the problem behind the symptom, not just the symptom.
