Weird question: Can doctors prescribe themselves their own medications? Or their immediate family members?

Question:
I just thought of this..wondered if there was some policy in the Hippocratic Oath they take? I could see that there would be some possibility of abuse of this, espeicially for controlled drugs or highly addictive drugs (i.e. oxy-contin or valium).

Answers:
They can prescribe medicine for their children. My friend's father is a doctor and he's treated his sons for all sorts of things. But don't worry, doctors are always being watched for any possible violations, and they can't just prescribe anything for a family member. But say, an antibiotic, or something not habit forming, won't raise any eyebrows.

Other Answers:
Themselves, no, family, yes, but it's highly discouraged.

Doctor's are supposed to get their prescriptions from other doctors, and for their families as well. yes they can but it is not very ethical for them to do it.

Every doctor can prescribe every medication, of course also for himself, he has the knowledge and its his job! This has nothing to do with the oath.On the other hand: of course there are ( and have to be) limits! For example, in prescribing controlled drugs - but these limits are the same for everybody. So a doctor could not prescribe much addicting drugs for himself in a legal way, he would have to lie, write other names or so, that is a criminal act. Other limits are set sometimes by insurance companies, but also these are the same for each case

Dr's are NOT allowed to treat themselves, and they are NOT allowed to treat their family members. It is against the law for them to do so.

CNA II yes they can if your spouse is a doctor
