What is a good home treatment for lower back pain?
Question:

If the pain is originated in the muscles, then stretching, doing strengthening exercises and taking anti inflammatory meds such as ibuprofen will help. If it originates in the bones, that's a problem for doctors to handle. If it is a muscle problem then, while watching t.v. have him do some stretches on a hard surface. Sit on the bare floor and try different stretch positions to see which ones cause the most pain, and work on those problem areas. Besides that, have him get off of his butt and stop watching so much t.v. The core of the body is the most important part to maintain because his problems will only get worse in the future if he does not do some abdominal or lumbar exercises. Investing in a heat pad will do some good too, but make sure to take aspirin or ibuprofen everyday.
The best pain reliever I have ever found for back pain is Aleve. It really works.
Once the pain has eased, the best thing to do is walk. Don't over do it, but you do need to move around because what causes the pain is the muscles spasming from trying to hold the injured part of your back motionless. Walking and massage will help that a lot.
Tell him to always sleep on his side with a pillow between his knees, never sleep on his stomache. For a good stress relief, lay on the floor at the foot of the sofa and let your legs fall onto the cushions bending at the knee. Also, lay flat on the floor and grab one knee at a time and pull to your chest while pointing the other leg straight out. Don't slouch on the couch! tell him to do stomach strengthening exercises and to always suck in his gut
There is no medicine for this problem so he doesn't have money, no matter.
He should enjoy less sex and do less hard work.
Massage, heating and acupuncture is the best treatment. At least he should go for acupuncture if other remedies doesn't help.

i know you said your friend has no money, but, he may have something in his house that will do.
Sometimes cold therapy is better than a heating pad, most doctors will say alternate cold and hot, so, i would say use a hot water bottle for heat and for cold put ice cubes in it, if he doesn't have a water bottle, he can make a something for the ice out of a 20oz coke bottle that has frozen water in it, and prop up on one side, putting the frozen coke bottle behind him between a comforter or sheets or something, this may numb his back for a bit, or use frozen veggies out of the freezer and put a towel around them, but i would first put both the coke bottle and the veggies in plastic baggies, also, for pain, i know this is gonna sound strange, but it works, cold medicne with dextromethorphan and guaffisian is great for pain and i would just add tylenol or aspirin to that for pain relief, but just using the cough medicine may be enough, if he does get a few dollars, he might want to look for Bio Freeze at a pharmacy, it is a roll on pain reliever, it sure has helped me... good luck (almost forgot......if he wants heat, he can take a bag of corn meal and put it in 2 pillow cases to make sure it doesn't spill out, tie real tight then microwave for a couple of minutes to heat it up.. that is what my grandma did for us growing up when we had no heating pad, it worked for us.
