Are you talking about a Mirena IUD? It looks like a small 'T' shape that is inserted into the cervix and no, you cannot remove it by yourself. It has to be removed by a professional. If you are considering an IUD there are a few things to consider.
1. Are you in a monogamus relationship? If not this is not a good idea. IUDs are great for birth control but they are not protection against STDs. In addition, they can lead to increased risk of HPV if you aren't very aware of what is going on in your body.
2. They can be pricy if you have no insurance coverage.pricy to insert and even pricier to remove if you decide you hate it.
3. If you have horrible cramps during your period an IUD will make them worse.
4. The Mirena IUD releases hormones, unlike a traditional copper IUD.so, if you don't react well to hormonal contraception this may not work for you.
I have a traditional IUD and I am convinced that it is the best option.but I am married, I don't mess around and neither does my husband.I never had bad cramps during my period but now I do.I still like this option better than any pills, shots, or Norplant though.
The Mirena coil looks like a regular coil, but also releases a very small amount of hormones.
You can't take it out yourself!
I am on my second one, the first one lasted about 3 years. I have regular check ups and never had any problems with it. The reason I choose this particular coil was that I used the have horrible migraine attacks, related to my periods. With this coil I have practically no periods (ever so often I have a bit of spotting, but nothing like a normal period) and no migraine.
As with all other coils, you have to be a bit careful: no messing around with different partners and certain hygienic precautions: for example, you can't use tampons as this could bring on an infection.
I moved country in between the 2 coils, but my gynaecologists in both countries actually recommended this particular coil if you do suffer from heavier periods and you normally wouldn't be able to use a coil..
