what causes nail-biting in a grown up?

Question:
i used to bite my nails when i was a child, but i stop at age 17. now i'm 27, and suddenly i started biting my nails, and i can't help it! i just catch myself doing it, and i tell myself that i have to stop, i quit for about a week and then, out of the blue, i start doing it. what causes this?

Answers:
Like a lot of compulsive behaviors, it is a way to deal with stress.
It isn't necessarily a good way to deal with stress, but if the habit has suddenly started again, there might be something in your life that is stressful. Even good things can cause stress--a new relationship, job, new baby, etc.
your probably under alot of stress. My hubby is 41 and he still bites his omg it must be me lol.
