What is causing my eye irritation?

Question:
Ive recently had a cold and now today I feel as if I have something under my right eyelid, Ive looked and cant see any thing in my eye but it feels as if something is there. My sclera is red. My husband says he gets a sty in his eye sometimes with a cold, have any of your heard that before and what do you do for it?

Answers:
Many different irritants and conditions can make eyes red and dry. Possible causes include fatigue, eyestrain, certain medicines, contact lenses, dust or wind, allergies, and infection. The preferred treatment for red or dry eyes depends on the cause.
If lack of sleep is causing eye irritation, the best treatment is adequate rest. If staring at a computer monitor causes eye discomfort, focus on distant objects to rest your eyes and relieve eyestrain.

Eye lubricants can help ease the drying effects of certain medicines, wind, contact lens irritation, or irritants such as dust or smoke. Lubricants--available as drops or ointments--can be used safely for long periods of time. Eye drop lubricants include GenTeal, Refresh Tears, or Hypo Tears. Lubricating eye ointments include Akwa Tears, Lacri-Lube, and Refresh PM. Ointments stay in the eye longer than drops, but are more likely to cause blurred vision. It’s best to use eye ointments at bedtime, when clear vision isn’t needed. Eye lubricants may not help when eye irritation is caused by infection or allergies.

Products such as Visine (generic name tetrahydrozoline) can help eye redness due to minor irritation. Other products like Opcon-A (Pheniramine and Naphazoline) can help relieve redness and irritation due to allergies. But you shouldn’t use these products for more than three to five days, or you'll run the risk of developing rebound eye redness or an allergic reaction to the products.

Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after you’ve used these products for a few days. Your doctor is in the best position to evaluate your problem, determine its cause, and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
It can be an allergy too. I live with severe eye allergies daily and it always feels like Ive got a stye. It feels like I have rocks in my eyes. Put some moisture drops in your eyes, or try some eye allergy drops.
