When I go to sleep, why does one nostril always close up?

Question:
And then when I switch sides, the stuffiness goes into another nostril?

I sleep on my sides, but most of the time my back, so I know I'm not squishing it shut. It irritates me so. And now I can't sleep because I couldn't breathe before! Any remedies besides switching sides, hot water or nasal sprays? (Do the sprays even work for that?)

Answers:
Your nose has turbinates, which naturally close off one nostril at a time, so one nostril may seem to remain partly congested. The septum is a cartilage wall, which divides the nose into left and right sides. It is relatively thin (less than 2 mm thick), but when it is bent over, it can block breathing through the nose. This can affect the sense of smell and taste, can be generally uncomfortable, and may precipitate snoring. Nose bleeds may also be caused by a bent nasal septum. The cause of a bent septum is usually trauma of some sort, although no obvious causative incident may be recalled by the patient.

Treatment is surgical, the operation being performed as a day case under a light general anaesthetic for the majority of patients. It is standard practice to reduce back the inferior turbinate bones at the same time, since this further improves flow through the nose, and takes only a few minutes. There are no scars on the outside of the nose, and no black eyes. Surgery is performed using special, delicate nasal instruments. Lasers are not usually of value when performing this procedure.

'snot for me to say --- LOL!
U could get nasal strips to open ur nostrils ..........then they maybe wont clogg up
This sounds like you may have a build up of dust in your home. Or maybe you have some latent sinus problems. This exact thing used to happen to me when I went over to my grandma's house. It turned out that it was reaction to dust. Animal hair can cause this as well. See your doctor or try Claritin. It worked for me.
Sounds like you may be suffering from GNS "Gimpy Nostril Symdrome It is a rare but harmless defect with no known cause but seems to affect people with allergies the most.Consult a good ear nose and throat doctor if it interfers with sleep and breathing
The problem may be is that you have allergies. You should go to an allergy specialist to help find out what is making your body produce histamines. You could buy a air purifier in the mean time. That way what ever is causing your congestion, will be filtered out of the air. Mold is the most common reason for allergies.
This is a MEDICAL condition which should be looked into...sleep amphenia is the condition and it can cause your sinuses to rupture and blood clots in the lungs causing a person to drown in their own fluids (in a matter of minutes.) If treated early you can expect to live at least 2 more years..You must stop eating all foods with grains and never eat meat again..meat creates mucous and it will block your sinuses and cause these symptoms...if you have good insurance policies make sure they do not have a "sleep disorder clause" in the policy...it could cost your loved ones dearly. hope this answers your question and "HAVE A NICE DAY"
