What causes an elongated uvula and what can be done about it?

Question:

My boyfriend's uvula (the wiggly part in the back of the throat) has gotten really long and red and lays on his tongue. He is stubborn and doesn't want to get it checked out, so I decided to do some web research. Any suggestions?

definitely get that checked out, if it becomes big enough it might block his airways

had the same thing happen to mine, I got sick and it grew and went to the doctor and was going to have it shortened by a surgeon but before I did it shrunk a little so now it doesn't bother me as much. This happened about 5 yrs ago and just recently I got sick again and it grew again but in two days it went back to its normal size which is still longer than normal. My doctor had no idea what caused this.

I recently had the same thing happen to me. I am also very stubborn and hate doctors. Turns out I have strep. My uvula is also very long and has been that way for 3 days now. I am hoping that is goes down when the strep subsides. The Dr. prescribed penicillin which seems to be helping with the strep but not necessarily with the elongated uvula. :( Wish your boyfriend good luck!
