Is it safe to use hydrogen peroxide on incisions? My Doctor said to use it,but I have heard otherwise.?

It kills bacteria but it also kills live tissue. You are very likely to get a scar. It fizzes and stings like billy-o! My mum used to put it on our cuts but it's now not recommended.

Just use what is necessary, and don't overuse it.

It is OK for topical use. A closed, stitched-up incision is OK. An open, gaping wound isn't.

my bottle says "for external use only" and "ask a doctor if you have deep puncture wounds"

Is the incision a deep puncture wound or a surface wound?

I have used hydrogen peroxide on my own incisions and found out that it helped in the healing proses. but I would not use it if the incision is an open one with out my doctors advice. i hope you feel better soon.

after surgery a friend of mine was told by her dr. to soak it in epsom salt this helps the healing and prevents infection .if its an area you cant soak it can also be put in your bath . her dr. said no peroxide ? but check with your dr .again to be sure

You can get all kinds of medical advice from your friends, neighbors, the mail man, or anybody else. The only advice that you should pay any attention to is the advice you get from your doctor. And, by the way, I use peroxide as a mouthwash. It's a great germ killer. Before hydrogen peroxide people years ago used vinegar. Remember Jack and Jill ? " He went to bed and mend his head with vinegar and brown paper".

Why is it that doctors, of all people, know so little about wound care. You only use peroxide on a FRESH DIRTY wound or if the area is infected. Peroxide will kill any new cells growing if the wound is healing. Normally, doctors tell you to keep the area clean and dry . Godloveya.

Sure, it's okay for anyone to use H2O2 BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER TO RINSE IT OFF OF YOUR SKIN.
H2O2 will kill the germs on anything but it will also 'burn' the healthy tissue away. When I use the word burn I don't mean an ouch type of burn. You don't feel it burning you in other words.
Peroxide will fizz and bubble, but it doesn't hurt when you use it on open cuts.
Just make sure that you rinse it off with normal saline or sterile water.
