how often do you need to get a tetanus shot?

Question: I was picking up stuff on the beach and accidently picked up a tiny piece of rusty metal. My finger did bleed a bit, so whatever got in got flushed out. I had a tetanus shot last fall do I need another?

i cut my self a couple weeks ago at work.. and when i went to the med center the nurse asked me when i had my last tetanus shot..i said 97 and then she told me its almost time to get another. she said you need one every 10 yrs.

There are 2 different types, one that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 10. That is regarding the vaccine, of course. If you had the shot that is done for treatment, after you have an accident like the one you had now, that doesn't last. If you are sure you did the vaccine, you are covered. If you did the serum against the disease, you are not. Try to clear that, because it is serious. The fact that the blood came out doesn't affect the possibility to get the virus.
