I have a five year old that asked about veins. How do I explain them to her?

Question:
My five year old came up to me and pointed to a blue line in her wrist and asked what it was. When I told her it was a vein she asked what a vein is. I am not real sure how to explain it so she will understand.

Answers:
You have a very bright child. Take her to the library and get a book on the circulatory system of the body. Ask the librarian to find one on a child's level. Show her how veins and arteries conduct blood through the system.
She may grow up to be a Dr.

Other Answers:
Geez.this isn't like she's asking you about sex. Just tell her it's the way blood gets distributed to the body and back to the heart.

Tell her that it is a pipe that carries blood through the body. Than show her a water pipe to compare. Tell her veins bring blood back to your heart (veins carry blood to the heart to be oxygenated and distributed through the body).

how about this.

Veins are like "little hoses" but instead of carrying water, they carry blood that your parts need to work!

Tell her that in her body, she has little tubes that carry her blood all over her body. some are deep so we can't see them, and some are up by your skin and we can see those. look tell her it's a secret passage way that blood can flow through her body then show her one of ur veins and compare

Tell her that veins are like wires for your body. Compare it to how the TV or hairdryer or lamp is plugged in. Her veins are connected to her heart and it carries her blood all over her body so that her fingers and toes and every other part of her body can get the energy that it needs. The blood takes all of the good food and water (or other beverages) throughout her body so that it does not get tired or hungry.

What she saw was blood it is blue only inside the body because
the lack of oxygen but when oxygen makes conntact with it it turns red

Get a biology book for kids at Barnes and Noble or another book store in the kids section. They usually are very cheap and explain things very well in good illustration.
Kids find it easier to grasp complicated biology when it is in color pictures. It will explain to her the whole process, the heart pumping blood to the rest of the body and the veins and the artery's functions.
Not only that, but it will explain much, much more to her. My son is only four and he knows about the heart, his bones, his brain, it's amazing how much your child and can learn from a simple biology book made for small children. I even learned things from it that I'd forgotten. Just tell her that veins are tread-like materials in the body that transports blood from one place to the other within the body. All i know about veins
