Lower back/hip muscle pain - Extreme!?

Question:
A few years back, my boyfriend was in a serious car accident. He was broadsided on the drivers side by a school bus and he was driving a mustang. Since then, he has small amounts of pain in the left hip area. Recently it has become severe. He had an MRI done the other day and they told him it isn't a vertabrae problem (what the chiropractor suspected) and they think it may be muscular. The doctor spoke of muscle detaching from the bone? I have never heard of this and would like some input please. He has another appointment today, but we feel so clueless. What does this mean? What are we up against?

Answers:
Well I hope the school district is picking up the medical tab. There is really no way of knowing until the doctor examines him.
