Does anyone take Yerba Mate tea leaves by consuming the leaves?

A friend recommends basically drinking the leaves with water, instead of brewing an infusion. Any thoughts on this?

If you want to drink yerba mate the traditional South American way, then it's infused, poured into a gourd (also called a mate cup), and sipped with a bombilla. Otherwise, I recommend making an infusion and enjoying its richness.

When I drink mate with the bombilla (popote, straw) some of the powdered mate leaves come up through the straw with each sip. It is a refreshing taste, but the little leaf particles get stuck in my teeth. Most of my friends prefer mate brewed in a drip coffee maker.
