I'm surprised to hear that nursing is hard to get into now. There's a nursing shortage. You should continue to work towards a nursing career. Good luck!
healthcare fields are very important and growing, go for it i am a respirtory therapist student and cant wait to get out there to help people. go for it and good luck Actually the demand for nurses is on the rise and will continue as the baby boomers age further. So it is a very good field to be in.
As for "what else is there"..why sell yourself short? Get into nursing if that is what you want! Nothing worth while ever comes easy!
Now get to it, and go after your dream. :)
You're right that it's almost impossible to get into any traditional campus based nursing school without being placed on a 2 to 3 year wait list right now. The probem is that despite a terrible shortage of nurses there's an even worse shortage of nurse educators going on so schools across the country are turning away qualified applicants by the thousands each year.
You could go into an allied health career field such as medical assisting or you could become a certified nursing assistant, but the smartest thing to do if you would like to become a registered nurse in the near future is to start by becoming an LPN.
LPN training typically takes between 9 to 12 months and you could go from there to get your RN degree through an online LPN to RN program while you work and using your employers tuition assistance to help pay for it. While others are still on the waiting list to get to start college to become an RN you could actually have become an LPN, worked for a year and finished your LPN to RN degree within 12 months-- so you could BE an RN about the time they finally get to start nursing school!

Hope that helps :)
