This could be through stress or a nightmare. Something that seemed small to you may have been very stressful to the child. Children's nightmares can be quite frightening.
When I was four, I awakened with crossed eyes. The optometrist said it was due to a terrible nightmare.
The summer between grades 7 & 8, I stuttered. My mother would stop me and have me begin again. It worked. My problem was that I had so many things in my mind, and I wanted to get them out all at once
Before you go to a speech therapist, see a psychotherapist or doctor for one-on-one counselling. If the child did not have a disorder before 4, I doubt it is a physical problem.
In the meantime, be available, compassionate and tender to this child. If there is more than one child, be sure this child has some time alone with you. Be cheerful.

First of all children don't "get" speech disorders. It isn't like catching a cold or something like that. You need to have the childs hearing checked first of all. I have a child with a speech delay and it was because he couldn't hear properly and needed tubes in his ears. Now that he has that, he goes to speech therapy in school and has a lot more confidence and is better behaved than ever. Take the child to the doctor!
