torn bicep tendon?

Question:
i tore my bicep tendon at the elbow end in my right arm. it is excrutiatingly painful!!!!! i have recently taken up martial arts and dont want to be out of action for too long.

my arm is very swollen and in a sling right now, and i am on some super uber painkillers that are taking away some of the pain. how long is this going to take to heal? how long before i can restart training? what are the chances of me doing this again or completely rupturing the tendon if i start training again too early??

Answers:
partial tears, which is what it sounds like you have are very painful. complete tears would be less painful but require surgery.

you should initially be using a lot of ice on the area to reduce the swelling. (10-15min every hour) this will also numb it some and therefore reduce pain.

who put you in the sling? if it was yourself, it may not be the best thing. it's okay initially but whats important is keeping very gentle movement on the elbow and shoulder. use it only when you cannot rest your arm and pillow your arm instead at night.

the recovery depends on your approach. i strongly recommend physio to speed up the process. it will encourage proper cell growth and strengthening of the muscle. tendons have poor blood supply and therefore take much longer to heal than muscles. you are likely to have pain for 6-8weeks but will vary in degrees.

if you start up working out again too soon you are very likely to re-injure area. strengthening is important, but not in the way you are currently training. Again physio for exercises.

hope it helps.
