Ex-smokers.?
Question:
I was thinking of the patches, have tried the gum.. didn’t care for it. Suggestions?
Answers:
The patches work. But of course, you must decide that you definitely want to quit. It's a lifestyle change, among other things. Even on the patches, I often found myself wanting to smoke, because I was in a situation that I usually smoked in. (such as having drinks at a bar, etc)
When I got in those situations, I would typically take the patch off and just go ahead and smoke. For that reason, I stayed on the patches for about 3 months. I just kept doing it until I got over it completely. I believe the average person quits in about a month, though.

I quit cold turkey and took up knitting. When I kept my hands busy I didnt smoke as much.
Call the American Lung Association. They have stop smoking groups and tools! Some are even free or at least low cost. I stopped smoking almost twenty years ago, stop smoking clinic through the American Lung Association. The programs may have changed names, but they are still out there. Good luck and remember this is for your health! I made up my mind to quit and just refused not to smoke & prayed a lot.And being scared that you might die is a plus. 2 and a half years smoke free.
My stepmom said that the patches work better than the gum.
Myself, I just quit cold turkey. My doctor said that after 3 days the physical cravings stop, and beyond that it's a matter of willpower.
What works for me, believe it or not, is that I scold myself for being such a marketing sheep. I question how I could let myself purchase an overpriced product that's slowly contributing to my early demise.
Sounds kinda weird, I know, but whatever works, right?
I signed up for a stop-smoking study at the university where I live. They had me on Zyban but I couldn't handle the side effects (serious insomonia), so I quit taking it. I essentially quit cold turkey. Check out www.quitnet.com, which has a lot of good information, links, and support groups.
