Uric acid is always present in the body but the kidneys usually get rid of most of it. Poor kidney function (possibly temporary) or over production can lead to accumulations of uric acid in the body, typically forming uric acid crystals in the joint of the big toe. Pre-menopausal women rarely get this condition. If yours is a first attack, your doctor will try and control it through lifestyle alterations, particularly diet, before prescribing medication such as Allopurinol. You can search under 'gout' on the internet and it will tell you which foods to avoid.

Although alcohol(particularly beer) and rich food tend to exaccerbate the condition, there are probably more fundamental causes at work.
For example, when the body is under stress, is overweight, or a person is getting on a bit, then these factors can interfere with the bodies metabolism, including kidney function. Shock, can also trigger an attack of gout, say after an operation. Weight loss through dieting, ironically, can also bring on a gout attack, as can excessive exercising, because it is stressing the body which then can't cope efficiently with the usual bodily requirements.

It is also important to drink lots of water to help the kidneys flush out toxins. You need to try and stay healthy and do some arobic exercises, but try to avoid overtiring yourself. Anybody below the age of say forty-five, who is starting to get gout attacks, should particularly examine their lifestyle. So look beyond just diet.

Cherries, particularly the Montmorency variety, are supposed to be good for removing uric acid from the body. Also, bicarbonate of soda is supposed to be good for counteracting uric acid

You can ask your doctor. My dad has it in both feet and his hands and something we found that has helped is if he eats or drinks cherry juice.(health food section of the store) or eats 6 Cherry's a day. The Bing or Lambert's not pie cherries. Good luck.
This is called the rich man's disease. King's would get this from all the rich foods they ate and all the beer they drank, go to your doctor and have him give you some medication for the gout and stay away from rich foods and drinking.
I've had gout in my right big toe for about 15 years now. The answer is to lay off wine and shorts -lager's alright in moderation. Do not get your feet wet when the rest of you is dry for any prolonged period. Take 1 tablet of diclofenac sodium (50mg) the gastro-resistant type 3 times in one day. Your doctor should approve it first of course; but they work miraculously for me for months on end...AND EAT MAINLY SALADS...NO RED MEATS AT ALL.
why not the guy who diagnosed you?
from personal experience, avoid tannins (red wine, port, tea, tomatoes).
but try to get your hands on a drug called cataflam (where I come from - it's got a different name in the UK).
You need a prescription because you're too stupid to self-prescribe in the UK (Tony Blair says so because he is god).
The pain comes and goes (gout, not Blair)
