Nerve damage in back. Q for Doctor/Nurse/Th. with personal experience.?

Question:
I have had a bad back -lower back pain for years, but a couple of months ago whilst on holiday in Turkey pretty much all the pain went. However it was a strange sensation that led to this. I felt numb all over, as if I had taken an incredibly powerful drug. This went after about a week and I rang a medical helpline who were baffled by my symptoms. One of the questions they asked was do I have a rash with what look like small blisters? At the time, I did not, but I have now spotted on my left side a small rash fitting this description. That, (from basic website research) would seem to indicate nerve damage.

I have all my feeling back, but the pain is still almost nonexistent, which is wonderful but if there is damage and the absence of pain is an indication of something bad, I guess I should get it checked out.

Any advice?

Answers:
It does indeed sound like shingles.
Get a Doctor's appointment ASAP.
The rash may spread - typically it forms a horizontal band - no big deal but it ITCHES like nothing else I ever had. The only relief I could get before I went to the doc was to stand in the shower. Great, but I think you're actually supposed to keep it dry! I got some cream - blessed relief - the rash reduced & went away (dropped off). Still blemished on skin, and a useful early warning for when I'm overtired, stressed, or coming down with something.. It feels like someone's trying to stab me with a broom handle.
Get it treated. The itch was so bad I couldn't even read or listen to music.

Go see an Osteopath. Nurses and GPs are not as knowledgeable and will not have the time.
Sounds like you had shingles, which is a rash that comes with the burn out of a nerve in any area of the body. There is a lot of pain at the start and then a blister looking rash comes out and then the pain gradually subsides. I have had this numerous times, so be aware that it may happen again. This is usually brought on by a lot of stress.
If the pain is gone that is wonderful. Be leary of what you read on the internet. A lot of untrue stuff out there. And trying to diagnose yourself is dangerous. Even doctors wont do that!

If you have full use of your extremities and no pain you are in very good shape! As long as the rash goes away and does not get infected or bother you, relax, and enjoy the painfree life!
