Why do people have different pain thresholds?

Question:
I mean some folk can stand excrutiating levels of pain, whilst others just crumble at the slightest twinge. And can certain food supplements help with pain tolerance?

Answers:
I have heard, oddly enough, that people who consistently eat diets high in sugars (sweets & such), are more prone to feeling more pain and also that the pain they feel is more exagerated. I heard this on local NPR station. sorry, can't remember name of pain management doctor.
as for that he-man comment, my male patients are much more likely to whine & complain about pain than my female ones. And the drama! :)
Training and nervous system wiring sensibility probably.
different experiences and psyche,probably
Some of it must be down to upbringing and strength of character
it;s how people experience pain.it has to do with its nervous system and how the painfull massage is interpreted by the brain..I think that chocolate and sugar helps
the simple answer to this is every one is different. I was stabbed twice in a fight and i didn't realise until the fight was over and i collapsed. I had so much Adrenalin running through my system that i was close to impervious to pain.

Other people don't have the same level of tolerance as me and this is normally because they have not felt much physical pain.

The human body is the most incredible device in existence. We can cope with some very horrible things but only when the need arises.

Hope this helps
Everyone is different some people have extremely strong wills
it comes from training yourself to tolerate pain, and is also based on genetics. there is a gene that determines the sensitivity of the nerves.
It's how you perceive the pain. Sometimes you can get a loving pinch or 'slap' from your partner during passionate embraces and it'll feel heavenly. Other times exactly the same pinch would hurt like hell!
some people are weaklings and some built like he-man, thats life we're all different
Everyones different. There are some ppl that have that rare thing where they dont even feel pain. Wouldnt THAT be great?
Im not one of those ppl, I have a very low tolerance to pain. I cant take much.
it depends on the circumstances, childbirth for example, we stand it cos we have to (that would be the folks that can stand excrutiating levels of pain) but give the same level of pain to a guy and the world would skid to an abrupt halt (that would be the others that crumble)!
I am suffering in pain for the last 5yrs and u do get your ups and Downs. people can say do this and do that put end of the day, I fight my pain by doing physio, pain management and pain clinic's.

tablets only work for a while. Ive found a tens machine can help and having acupuncture too. I can twist me ankle badly and it doesn't come never my back pain.

I fight it every day and not let it take over, keeping positive about things can help and focus on goals too.
Pain is an exceeding complex issue. From a purely biological point of view there is absolutely no such thing as differing pain thresholds. Pain Nerves - like all nerves in the body have a threshold at which they fire off or not. For example a pain nerve doesn't turn on a 'little bit' - its either on or off. Now the threshold that a pain nerve fibre activates at is fairly common and consistent across most people, regardless of sex, race or age. The reason that pain may be more intense or not will depend on the amount of nerves firing and the type - there are different types, the sharp nasty stabby pain type and the deep throbbing achy pain type as well as a few others. Some people may have slightly abnormal thresholds - an example of this is in Epilepsy where the nerves in the brain get over excitable and tend to fire to quickly - this can cause a fit.

BUT - in general - there is no difference PHYSIOLOGICALLY between the healthy pain response in a male or female.
Different people different pain thresholds, I can take more pain than he can like you say a little twinge and hes dying i had some shoulder surgery done and cant do as much but didn't hurt as bad as he would have.
