I don't know, but I do know if you eat a lot of bananas, the charlie horses will come less and less! Something to do with potassium I think. If I don't eat bananas for a while, I get terrible charlie horses in my calfs and the backs of my thighs while asleep, they wake me up and I can't do a thing, just take the pain till they go away. Why this happens while I am asleep, I don't know! When I eat at least 3 bananas a week, this doesn't happen, so all I know what to tell you is to eat a lot of bananas to stop this from happening! Try it, it really works!

You are not getting enough potassium in your diet. The lack of potassium causes muscles to cramp up. Try eating bananas, potatoes, oranges, and other potassium-rich foods.
In the meantime, massage works well. Keep the muscles working as much as possible. The more they are inactive, the more it will hurt.
Hope it's not what I had. My charlie horse turned out to be two herniated disks. The pain eventually radiated into my right arm and numbness in my finger tips. Pain management clinic stopped the pain by injections into spine. Hoping this works to avoid surgery.
