food allergies? banana, melons, carrots?
Question:
Answers:
This is a condition known as the "oral allergy syndrome" and is associated with local reactions in the mouth to a variety of fruits and vegetables. Patients with respiratory hay fever-like symptoms are most susceptible. Persons who get ragweed nasal allergy often experience oral symptoms when eating melons and bananas whereas patients with tree pollen allergy can be sensitive to celery, potatoes, apples kiwi etc. Allergen injections to pollens can ameliorate the syndrome in some patients.
You may wish to ask your doctor if taking an antihistamine would be useful in helping to prevent the oral reactions.
Treatment - The mast cell stabilizing drug, Gastrocrom (US brand name for oral cromolyn)
